I AM MY BROTHER'S KEEPER Virtual Jerusalem Presents Israel@50 |
American Indian Jesse Slade was a member of Israel's Fourth Anti-Tank Squad. Slade became sympathetic to the Jews during World War II when, as he put it, his Jewish commanding officer became "the first guy to treat me like a white man." After making his way to Israel to join the fighting, he was asked by a Life Magazine reporter what an Indian was doing in a war between Arabs and Jews. His answer was a classic: "Well, ma'am, I reckoned it was the Christian thing to do." (Courtesy of Tiny Balkin) ..................................................................... From I Am My Brother's Keeper (Schiffer Military History Press, 1998, by Jeffrey Weiss and Craig Weiss, Foreword by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), a newly-released book that dramatically documents the little-known personal stories of one thousand North American volunteers, Jews and non-Jews, who left the safety of their homes and interrupted their lives to fight for Israel's independence. |
